A New Pocket Park for Northcote

Locals will have more space to enjoy the outdoors, with a new pocket park at Merri Common in Northcote under a re-elected Andrews Labor Government.

We’ll provide a $1.5 million grant to Darebin City Council to deliver a new pocket park in Northcote, providing a space for local families, friends and kids to enjoy.

With many people across Northcote choosing to live in apartments or units without a backyard we know how important local green, open space is.

It’s why work is underway to upgrade 41 parks and 29 pocket parks across Melbourne as part of the Suburban Parks Program creating up to 6,500 hectares of new parkland, walking trails, bike trails, pocket parks and dog parks – the equivalent of more than 170 Royal Botanic Gardens.

Labor will also deliver new dog parks and more support to give beloved pets the care they need, as part of a $20 million animal welfare package announced this week.

Victorian pets are a part of the family. Labor will invest $13.4 million to build six new dog parks in Armstrong Creek, Wollert, Sydenham, Mount Waverley, Wantirna and Endeavour Hills – and upgrade up to 22 dog parks – giving local families and their pets more spaces to enjoy.

Our open spaces are enjoyed year-round by our local community, and Labor will make sure that we have more space for people to get outoors and keep active.

Only a re-elected Labor Government will deliver the projects our whole community needs – because only Labor will do what matters.

Quotes attributable to Labor Member for Northcote Kat Theophanous

“As our neighbourhoods grow, it’s important we invest in quality open spaces. I know local residents have been keen to see this underutilised space become a real asset for the community.”

Labor has a strong record of delivering better parks for inner-city and suburban areas which I’m proud to see strengthened with this $1.5 million investment. It’ll deliver a great pocket park where friends and families can come together.”
