Hi, I’m Kat Theophanous - the Labor Member of Parliament for Northcote in the Victorian Legislative Assembly.
Northcote is a creative, clever, and compassionate community. It’s been my home for my whole life – and I will always fight for us.
As we grow, there are challenges and opportunities ahead – to tackle inequality and cost of living pressures, strengthen economic security and bring better balance to our lives.
As your MP for Northcote, I’m focused on delivering real action.
That means better healthcare and modern schools, secure jobs and thriving businesses, affordable housing and community facilities, and leading a rapid transition to renewable energy for a safe climate.
As Parliamentary Secretary for Women's Health, I’m also proud to be working to progress the Labor Government’s work to improve women’s access to quality healthcare. And as Parliamentary Secretary for Renters, I’m working to establish a fairer and more secure rental system for Victorians.
I believe in the power of community. So I’ll always listen and work with you to stand up for the things we care about.
Together, we can keep delivering a bright future for the inner north.
From today, Victorian renters can transfer their existing bond to their next rental and avoid wearing the cost of two bonds at once.
Labor’s new Portable Rental Bond Scheme means renters can port their bond across through the existing residential tenancies bonds system.
It ends a situation where renters were left out of pocket, often for weeks, waiting for a refund on their old bond.
With half-price fares now in place until the end of the year, Victorians are already saving hundreds of dollars a year – now we’re making catching the train even easier.
Tap and go will be switched on in stages on the rail network:
7 June: Sunbury, Pakenham, Cranbourne, Metro Tunnel, Werribee, Williamstown, Sandringham, Frankston, Stony Point, Bendigo, Gippsland and Geelong lines.
14 June: Mernda, Hurstbridge, Lilydale, Belgrave, Alamein and Glen Waverley lines.
Labor is making it easier and fairer for Victorians to rent, buy and stay in their homes.
New laws introduced to the Victorian Parliament today will protect renters and make buying a home fairer.
Reserve prices out in the open
For too long, Victorians have wasted their Saturdays at auctions chasing homes they were never going to get.
That ends now.
Labor's Australian-first laws will require agents to publish a reserve price at least seven days before any auction or sale.
Yarralea Street in Alphington is set to have a new school crossing installed to improve safety for students, families and local residents.
Member for Northcote Kat Theophanous MP today announced $150,000 from the Victorian Government to deliver the project as part of Labor’s Safe Local Roads and Streets Program.
My adjournment is for the Minister for Health, and I seek an update on the establishment of a women’s health clinic in the Royal Children’s Hospital dedicated to supporting adolescents and girls.Throughout the inquiry into women’s pain, as Parliamentary Secretary for Women’s Health I heard powerful and often heartbreaking stories from women whose pain began in childhood or adolescence but who were dismissed, ignored or told that severe pain was simply a normal part of being a girl. For many this led to years of unnecessary suffering, delayed diagnosis and poorer health outcomes.
Work from home is a fantastic notion and so very worthy of debate, though it does not seem to have been much of a debate tonight.
The Northcote electorate has one of the highest proportions of people who do currently work from home in the state, and we are really proud of that. I see this when I knock on doors in our neighbourhoods. Time and again people will open the door and chat to me about how they are working from home that day. They are spending their time working from home, and they will tell me about how much easier it is to be able to do this, how much more productive they have been, how much money and time they have saved on travel and on child care.
Wominjeka. It means ‘welcome’ in Wurundjeri language, the language of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people, custodians of the lands encompassing the Northcote electorate, and when you walk up Hutton Street on your way to Thornbury Primary School, ‘Wominjeka’ is written in giant letters on the fence of the school, artfully and lovingly created by the school community, who have tied small pieces of fabric through the gaps in the fence to create the word along Hutton Street.
My question is to the Minister for Public and Active Transport.
How is the Minister ensuring that Stationeers in my community are supported to undertake their volunteer work now that the program has transitioned to VicTrack management?
I have been proud to support the Northcote Stationeers for many years, including successfully advocating for Metro to install taps so volunteers do not have to lug buckets of water to keep young plantings alive.
This is what good transport reform looks like. It is not one project, it is not one road or one mode. It is a network, it is safety, it is freight, buses, bikes, walking, enforcement, maintenance and accountability all working together in an integrated system.
Today is Budget Day and there’s a lot to be excited about in Northcote.
Wales Street Primary School is getting a major upgrade, backed by over $21 million to deliver a new gym, library and classrooms.
