GREEK LANGUAGE PROGRAM TO CONTINUE AT LA TROBE
Following constructive meetings between La Trobe University and a working group of senior figures from the Greek community, an agreement has been reached to continue the teaching of Greek Language Studies at the university.
Kat Theophanous, Member for Northcote, was part of the working group established to negotiate the outcome with the university’s senior executive. The group joined La Trobe Vice-Chancellor Professor John Dewar AO today to make the announcement.
The program will continue for three years under an agreement which includes a commitment made by the Greek Community of Melbourne and Victoria to provide both additional funding and assistance in increasing student enrolments.
The situation will be reviewed after Semester 1 Census in 2023 and the future of the program will be dependent on whether enrolment targets have been met.
“The cultural, linguistic and economic value of the Greek language to Victoria cannot be understated,” said Ms Theophanous.
“That is why over these last months, the Greek community has worked constructively and tirelessly with La Trobe University towards an agreement that will retain the last remaining tertiary Modern Greek Language program in Victoria.”
With the assistance of generous donations and fundraising efforts, the Greek Community of Melbourne and Victoria has committed to providing $192,000 over three years as well as proactive assistance in ensuring the program reaches a financially viable enrolment target.
La Trobe University has warmly welcomed the support of the Greek community and Ms Theophanous has committed to advocating for additional support from the State Government to augment these efforts.
“As a member of the working group, I know that this outcome is a testament to the strength and dedication of the Greek community and look forward to what the future brings for Greek language studies at La Trobe.”
