INNER MELBOURNE PAVES THE WAY FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
The Victorian Government is taking steps towards developing a stronger circular economy for Victoria with a round table hosted by the Inner Metropolitan Partnership to discuss how to reduce waste and maximise the use of resources.
Member for Northcote, Kat Theophanous MP said shifting to a more circular economy will grow the economy, increase jobs and reduce impacts on the environment, with more recycling, less waste and less pollution for Victorians.
The event will bring together community stakeholders from Melbourne’s Inner Metro region to discuss what is working well to create a circular economy and what industry support is needed to help address challenges.
The Inner Metropolitan Partnership is one of six Metropolitan Partnerships established by the Victorian government in 2017. It covers the urban centre of Melbourne, including the local government areas of Melbourne, Yarra and Port Phillip.
Metropolitan Partnerships offer a way for local communities to speak directly with decision makers in state and local governments on the priorities and issues that matter most to their region.
The Inner Metropolitan Partnership will use feedback from this round table to inform its annual independent advice to the government later this year.
The Victorian Government is committed to developing a whole-of-government circular economy policy and action plan, which is to be released in late 2019.
The policy will find new ways for Victorian businesses and communities to use materials more efficiently and avoid waste in all stages of the production cycle.
The Victorian Budget 2019/20 is investing $35 million to strengthen and diversify Victoria’s waste and recycling industry.
The Government has invested more than $141 million in Victoria’s waste and resource recovery industry, which has diverted more than 770,000 tonnes of reusable material from landfill every year.
