Statement on the Preston Market
The Preston Market is iconic, has grown with our community and reflects our evolving diversity. I do not want us to lose it.
Although the Market sits outside of the Northcote Electorate, I have made a point to meet with and write directly to the Victorian Planning Authority (VPA) to relay my concerns.
On behalf of our community, I conveyed to them the significance of the market and how vital it is to thoroughly take into account the community submissions.
I raised community concerns around the market footprint, maintaining the affordable and multicultural character of the market, certainty of tenure for stall holders, density and height limits as well as open space and parking pressures.
The planning process is still underway. I remain concerned that the footprint and character of the market could still be altered to a degree that is not acceptable.
I will continue to represent these concerns directly to the VPA as well as to the Minister for Planning and the local Member for Preston, on behalf of our community.
