Ms THEOPHANOUS (Northcote): My constituency question is for the Minister for Health in the other place. What will the minister do to assist schools in the Northcote electorate to provide shade in their outdoor spaces?
Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, yet melanoma is also one of the most preventable forms of cancer.
I know several of the schools in my electorate have been proactive in their sun protection policies and have applied for school shade grants under the Andrews government’s school shade grants program.
In particular, I know Bell Primary School and Wales Street Primary School do not have many outdoor spaces where children can play safely in the shade. As we head into much warmer weather, having shade will be critical to the health and wellbeing of students. I strongly support these grant applications, and I look forward to the minister’s response.
